Betty Hanawa and Cassie Ryan Chat Monday

Filed under: WhatWeRead.Com, Aspen Mountain Press — misterseo @ 7:52 pm

Romance writers Betty Hanawa and Cassie Ryan join Lizzie T Leaf in the romance author chats at Realms of Love Monday June 11 at 9 PM EDT/6 PM PDT.

Betty will tell us about More Than She  Asked. Here’s a little bit about her:

Betty Hanawa had two highly rated, lovely, sensual contemporaries published with Triskelion Publishing when her publisher and her editor kicked her out of her comfort zone. To her surprise, she discovered they were right. She now writes paranormal erotic romances, filled with snarky humor that frequently slips into the ironic. Her books are receiving high praise with new books being eagerly anticipated. Her aunts are delighted with her success. Her children are embarrassed to discover their mother knows about sex.  She really enjoys being the scandal of her small town.

Cassie has Ceremony of Seduction coming from Kensington soon. Let’s learn a little about Cassie:

Cassie Ryan tried her hand at erotic romance after critiquing so many for Brit Blaise and devouring favorite erotic romance authors like Cheyenne McCray and Jordan Summers.  It became almost a ‘see if I can do it’ type of challenge for her.  Never one to turn down a challenge, she jumped in with both feet.  She created a world where an ugly duckling finds out she’s the future queen for a race of otherworldly witches who thrive on sexual energy.  It takes the Prince of her erotic dreams to show her how to save a planet she never knew existed.  The partial story was requested by several different houses, and after attending RWA Nationals in 2005, Cassie sent off a query to Audrey LaFehr at Kensington who was just starting the new Aphrodisia line.  Fast forward to March 2006, Cassie had been busy writing books as her alter ego and hadn’t gotten around to finishing the book with the working title Seduction of the Klatch, and had figured her submission had been lost in the bowels of the Kensington slush pile.  Then suddenly, she was contacted by Kensington and asked if she could turn her world of Klatch witches into a three book series.  The correct answer, of course, was YES!

Lizzie will update us on Twice a Virgin (maybe she’ll even explain it). Lizzie says:

I’ve loved books since I opened the first one. My dream was to write them myself. Of course life has a way of throwing us a curve ball, and the writing became a distant memory, lost in the hectic day to day world of family, job, laundry and housework. When the twinkling ember did spark, it was usually doused by someone demanding their share of my time, and me allowing it to happen.
But life does seem to go full circle. The desire to put the stories that continued to play in my head on paper emerged stronger than ever, and at a time in my life when there was someone encouraging me to do it. Now I’m living my dream; creating stories to share with others. I hope you enjoy them.
My other hobbies, gardening and baking, are now taking a back seat, and as for housework…what’s that?

There will be give-aways! Join us Monday for some fun chat with some writers of hot erotic romance.

Write Paranormal Romance? AMP is Seeking Submissions

Filed under: WhatWeRead.Com, Aspen Mountain Press — misterseo @ 4:11 pm
Aspen Mountain Press is launching a new paranormal series and is asking for submissions.
Word count: 15K–100K
Format:  eBooks
Editor: Nikita Gordyn
Genre: Contemporary Paranormal Romance
Can be a heterosexual couple, GBLT, ménage, etc.
Mainstream with romantic elements will be considered.
Very sexy/sensual is what we’re looking for. Both graphic and non-graphic will be considered.
Story Guideline:
The main characters have to do something at the bar to tie it together.  They know the proprietor, who is a vampire (Cody Warren was turned while in the military serving in Afganistan). Humans can go in to see the paranormals or two (or three) paranormal characters, meet outside the bar, etc, but at some point both the bar and Cody must be in a scene.

Bartending Tales

Stories from Del Fantasma in Vista Loma, California

Bible

Del Fantasma is a bar just north of Point Loma, California, known for its ghosts and other-worldly experiences.  The owner and bartender, Cody Warren knows a thing or two about the supernatural.  While stationed in Afghanistan, Cody was rescued and later turned into a vampire.

Not that he minds.  He is the sole owner of Del Fantasma and the hours suit him just fine.  He has both human and other-worldly clients, and a knack for matchmaking that would rival any bona fide yenta.  After ten years of bringing couples together, not much surprises Cody.  He’s certainly heard every tale of love gone right and wrong over the years.  In fact, he can recall a tale for nearly every drink he mixes.

Examples: Sex on the Beach: a mermaid and her true love (general idea only), Kentucky Tornado: the city meets the country in a tale of horse-trading (general idea only), Harvey Wallbanger, White Russian, Kiss in the Dark, Fuzzy Navel, Tequila Sunrise, Three Wise Men, Stormy Weather, Sea Breeze, Long Island Iced Tea, Pain Killer, Singapore Sling, Alabama Slammer, Aztec Punch, or any other drink that the author would like to do.

Please submit complete stories or a synopsis with the first three chapters electronically only. Be sure to include your name, mailing address and contact information to submissions at aspenmountainpress dot* com   with Del Fantasma in the subject line of the email.

JM Snyder Can Teach You About The Writing Business

Filed under: Writing Tips, Aspen Mountain Press — misterseo @ 7:21 pm

We have a huge amount of respect for JM Snyder. JM works hard at the craft of erotic romance writing as well as the business of writing. She is unpretentious and willing to help.

In this article JM Snyder Shares Writing Business Lessons . She’s talking from experience here:

How did JM learn promotion?

I began devouring any and all information I could find on self-promotion. iUniverse had a wealth of articles available to new authors, covering everything from book signings to sell sheets to press releases. I read them all, took them to heart, and began a direct mail marketing campaign that targeted gay/lesbian bookstores around the country. With my subsequent releases, that campaign seemed to work — I received small royalty checks on a quarterly basis…

What did JM do that allowed her sales to “skyrocket”?

Then the editor at Aspen Mountain Press, an up and coming e-publisher, contacted me about re-publishing my novels as e-books. I was skeptical — the books were currently available in electronic format, but I had seen nothing in my sales figures to suggest co-venturing with a publisher. For one, I currently made 80% off all sales, and the standard e-book publisher’s royalty rate of 35-40% paled in comparison. But the marketing person in me decided to take a chance, and sent the publisher a book I planned to self-publish. I negotiated to keep the print rights, and the book was released in both paperback and e-book formats simultaneously.

Suddenly, my sales skyrocketed…

What does JM Snyder do to drive traffic to her web site?

I track my website visitors carefully, and exploit ad campaigns targeting certain audiences who may be interested in my books. I’ve joined the ManLove Romance co-operative, a group of like-minded writers who pool their resources to afford advertising in print magazines with a large readership. Because I started in fan fiction, I run a banner ad on a popular adult fan fiction site, drawing over 100 hits a week. Not bad for $15 a month.

Everyone can learn something from this article and we thank JM Snyder for taking the time to write it.

Reynardine by Lucynda Storey at Romantic Observer - Reviews

Reynardine by Lucynda Storey at Romantic Observer - Reviews

Athena reviewed Lucynda Storey’s Reynardine over at Romantic Observer. She gave it 4/5 on the Enjoy-O-Meter and rated it Hot on the temperature gauge.

…this is the type of paranormal romance that satisfies readers on many levels.  There is the curse to contend with and it is handled well.  Background to it is revealed in small pieces like a puzzle that we are able to put together by the end of the book.  A bit of mystery on whom and why someone would wish for Agnis to fail in having wolves reintroduced to that corner of Ireland also thickens the plot.

For this and other romance reviews check out RomanticObserver.com.

You can buy Reynardine at Aspen Mountain Press.

The Manlove Authors page is a list of erotic romance authors that specialize in what is often referred to as m/m or slash romantic fiction.

Here’s what Laura Baumbach, the owner of the site has to say:

This Manlove Authors Site is a directory of M/M authors. We have created this site as a service to the many M/M fiction authors as a way for potential readers to locate authors.

If you are a true M/M author (not just a tiny side M/M relationships or M/M/F menages to slip in the trendy gay character in your stories), and are interested in joining the directory, email me at manloveauthors@arkwolf.com.

Some noteworthy authors listed on the site include Laura Baumbach herself,  Lena Austin and JM Snyder.

eBooks are Good for Women

Filed under: WhatWeRead.Com, Writing Tips, Aspen Mountain Press, What Women Read — misterseo @ 7:16 pm

eBooksReader stumbled on Racy Li’s blog post today.

In Erotic Romance: Science Fiction’s Forgotten Stepsister Racy shares a couple of interesting observations about romance novels in general and science fiction erotica in particular. I suggest you read the whole piece but here’s a few gems.

Epublishing erotic romance is giving greater economic power to women as business leaders, editors, artists, and authors.

and

Yes, romance has a reputation for formulaic plots, and bodice rippers, and at times, it is deservedly so, but formulas and bad books exist in every genre. Erotic romance with its speculative elements is arguably reaching more non-science fiction readers (predominantly women) than books labeled squarely science fiction.

Are you a woman looking to write, create, publish, succeed? There are some darn good role models out there and it’s a changing world.

Check out Aspen Mountain Press, Loose-Id and Ellora’s Cave. These are women who are making it happen for themselves and those who are willing to invest their time and talent with them.

ebooks4u has some great posts about erotica for women and the women who make it happen.

Novelist’s Boot Camp

Filed under: WhatWeRead.Com, Writing Tips, Aspen Mountain Press — misterseo @ 7:15 pm

Source: Enjoy your trip down storyteller road

After learning a few tips from Todd Stone’s NOVELIST’S BOOT CAMP I had my orders and I was able to complete my mission, or in my case, my novel!!”  Barbara M. Harrison, author of “Feel My Heart,” (Aspen Mountain Press, October ’06).

“Todd has such energy and a terrific ability to connect subject matter with audience. A writer cannot sit five minutes in one of his presentations and not realize that here’s someone who informs, who teaches, and who broadens one’s understanding of the craft.
Novelist’s Boot Camp is something special, a way for new—and established—writers to find a fresh approach to the work of getting a story out of one’s brain and onto paper.”

eBook Publishing Makes Sense

Filed under: WhatWeRead.Com, Writing Tips, Aspen Mountain Press — misterseo @ 10:17 am

Many thanks to Maya Reynolds for bringing this Detroit Free press article by Marta Salij to our attention.

For the record, romance novels (not just erotic romance) now account for 39% of all fiction sold and 55% of all mass market paperbacks sold. That’s a huge number. $1.2 billion in sales for 2004.
I know some people like to sneer at romance, but it’s hard to argue with $1.2 billion in sales.

One of the interesting things about the article was that it gave the history of the e-publisher that started the trend in erotic romance. I’ve referred to this story in the past, but it bears repeating in terms of providing inspiration.
Back in the late ’90s,

Tina Engler was a single mom of two daughters living in Tampa, Florida and trying to get a contract for her romance novels. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find a traditional publisher to buy her work because it was so explicit. Traditional publishers were convinced that women would not want to read such detailed sexual descriptions…

Has your writing been sitting on some editor’s slush pile for a year? Do you have a novel gathering dust in the drawer? Do you just know that your characters will touch the hearts of readers if you could just get their story into their hands? You are not alone.

Here’s a bit of the Detroit Free Press article…

“When people look at me, they’re stunned I write it,” Denby says. “I’m your typical, middle-aged, suburban Detroit mother-looking-type person.”

In 2001, the 40-year-old married mother of seven decided to try to write “category” romance, shorter books by Silhouette or Harlequin that come out in batches monthly. But she couldn’t nail the specific requirements of each line.

She was still writing “sweet” romances — so chaste they seldom feature a kiss until the last page — when she came across Ellora’s Cave, then a little-known online publisher of erotica that wasn’t yet recognized by the Romance Writers of America. RWA is the main organization for romance writers, with 9,500 members.

Denby read Christine Warren’s “Fantasy Fix,” a sort of bawdy “Waiting to Exhale” with vampires and bondage.

“And I thought, ‘I can do this,’ ” she says.

And how: She’s written or contributed to 15 books for Ellora’s Cave since, along with a couple for Echelon Press and a couple of more mainstream romances under the name Sydney Laine Allan…”
